November 2024
The Commonwealth government launched a surprise inquiry into all aspects of nuclear energy. In addition to our ongoing call to lift the ban on this sustainable energy source, our submission went into detail on nuclear's climate, environment and public health benefits; a likely deployment timeline in Australia; and the strong safeguards that exist to manage nuclear waste. We also commented on the resilience of nuclear power plants to earthquakes, how nuclear energy can contribute to water security, and the role nuclear could play in a Just Transition.
September 2024
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) invited a long-awaited second round of consultation regarding new breeding techniques (NBTs). NBTs are modern methods for gene editing which allow faster and even safer modification of crops to suit farmers' and consumers' needs, compared to older "conventional" GMOs. WePlanet Australia supported an update to FSANZ's definitions to formally distinguish between NBTs and older GMOs. We also recommended a decadal review of the regulations to ensure they keep up with changing technology.
February 2024
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) sought comment on the application to make cultured quail available as a novel food. Australians deserve a choice in alternatives to slaughtered meat, and our country is home to world-class agriculture and cutting-edge biotechnology. We hope this application for home-grown cultured meat is successful, and the first of many such applications!
May 2023
In response to its consultation regarding fuel efficiency standards for vehicles, the Commonwealth announced a long overdue commitment to introducing such standards.
November 2022
Nuclear energy contributes to global decarbonisation and prosperity. Australians deserve to have it seriously considered it as part of our energy mix. For that, the ban must be lifted.

See our Rethink Nuclear campaign for more on this important clean energy source.
October 2022
Burning native trees should not be incentivised as part of a clean energy future. Our voices were heard; native forest biomass was excluded from the Renewable Energy Target.
